Quick Answer
The main MTN data USSD code is
*136#, which opens MTN’s menu to buy data bundles and check your balance. MTN also lists *136*2# for bundles, *136*1# for a detailed balance and *136*3# (Me2U) to transfer data to another MTN number.
Steps to Complete This Task
Pick the code for what you want to do with your MTN data:
| Task | Code MTN lists | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Buy a data bundle | *136# or *136*2# | MTN buy data |
| Check data balance | *136# | MTN data balance |
| Detailed balance | *136*1# | MTN balance |
| Transfer data to another MTN number (Me2U) | *136*3# | MTN data transfer |
| Stop a data bundle purchase | *136*5# | This page |
| Personalised social bundles | *143# | This page |
- Dial the code from your MTN SIM.
- Follow the menu on your screen; MTN changes menu wording and order.
- Confirm any purchase or transfer only after checking the amount.
What You Need Before You Start
- An active MTN SIM and network signal.
- Airtime to pay for a bundle.
- For Me2U transfers, the recipient’s MTN number.
Fees, Limits and Availability
MTN’s USSD help pages do not list data bundle prices or Me2U transfer limits. The menu shows current prices before you confirm. MTN’s USSD codes page lists Me2U on *136*3# as the route to transfer data, and does not list a separate data-sharing code.
If the USSD Code Does Not Work
- Use the MTN App, where balances show on the home screen and bundles are under Recharge.
- WhatsApp MTN Chat on 083 123 0011 and send “balance”, or use Main Menu, Recharge, Data.
- See data balance not working and data bundle not activated.
- Dial the code yourself from your own phone. Never dial a code someone sends you by SMS, WhatsApp or social media.
