If your data balance code is not working, first check that you are dialling the code from the correct SIM, on the correct network, with enough signal for a USSD session to open. A failed balance code does not always mean your data is gone or that the code has changed. It can also happen because of a temporary USSD error, a weak network connection, an expired menu session, a SIM restriction, or a recently loaded bundle that has not reflected yet.
This guide helps you troubleshoot the issue safely before you retry, buy another bundle, or contact your mobile provider.
Quick Fixes to Try First
Start with these checks before trying another code or contacting support.
| Quick check | What to do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Check the correct SIM | On a dual-SIM phone, make sure the USSD request is being sent from the SIM that owns the data bundle. | USSD codes only work on the network they belong to. |
| Check signal | Move to a stronger signal area, switch airplane mode on and off, then retry. | USSD needs a live mobile network session, even if it does not use mobile data like an app. |
| Wait before retrying | If the menu timed out or failed, wait a few minutes before trying again. | Repeated attempts can keep failing if the network session is stuck. |
| Use the provider’s current route | Use the latest verified balance route for your network. | Old screenshots, copied codes, and outdated menu paths may no longer work. |
| Check whether the bundle just loaded | If you bought data recently, wait briefly and check again. | A recharge or data bundle may take time to reflect. |
| Stop before confirming anything | Do not confirm a purchase, transfer, subscription, or recurring bundle unless the screen is clear. | A failed balance check should not turn into an unwanted transaction. |
For the main balance-checking guide, go to check data balance USSD code. If you were trying to buy a bundle instead, use buy data USSD code. If your airtime or data did not reflect after paying, see airtime not showing after recharge.
Why This USSD Problem Happens
A data balance code not working error can have more than one cause. The important thing is to avoid guessing, retry safely, and use the provider’s official route where possible.
You may be using the wrong network code
USSD codes are network-specific. A Vodacom balance route will not work on an MTN SIM, and a Telkom balance route will not work on a Cell C SIM. This is a common problem on dual-SIM phones, phones with eSIM and physical SIM combinations, mobile routers, and recently replaced SIM cards.
Before retrying, check which SIM is selected for calls. USSD requests are usually sent through the phone dialler, so the active calling SIM matters.
The code may be correct, but the menu may have changed
Sometimes the main USSD code still opens, but the balance option is no longer where the user expects it to be. The menu might use wording such as “balances”, “usage”, “bundles”, “remaining balance”, “detailed balance”, or “account”.
If the menu opens but does not immediately show your data balance, do not assume the data is missing. Read the options carefully and look for a balance or usage section.
The USSD session may have expired
USSD menus can time out quickly. If you take too long to choose an option, the session may close before the balance appears.
Common messages include:
- “Session expired”
- “Connection problem”
- “Request failed”
- “Invalid request”
- “Service unavailable”
- “Try again later”
- “Unknown application”
- “MMI code error”
If this happens, close the session completely, wait a short while, and start again from the beginning.
Your network signal may be too weak
A phone can show some signal but still fail to complete a USSD request. This may happen indoors, during network congestion, during temporary service issues, after load-related outages, or in an area with unstable coverage.
Try moving closer to a window or outside, restarting the phone, or switching airplane mode on and off before trying again.
The SIM or account may have a restriction
A balance code may fail if the SIM is inactive, recently SIM-swapped, blocked, suspended, not fully active, or linked to an account type with different balance-checking rules. Some contract, prepaid, top-up, router, business, promotional, or shared-data products may show balances differently.
If the code used to work and suddenly stopped, check whether there has been a recent SIM swap, number port, account migration, bundle change, or service restriction.
The data balance may not be showing in the main balance view
Sometimes the data is active, but it does not appear where you expect it. This can happen with promotional data, night data, social bundles, app-only bundles, shared data, once-off allocations, recurring bundles, or contract data.
Look for a detailed balance option before buying another bundle.
Provider-Specific Checks
Use the route for your own mobile network. Only rely on exact codes and menu paths after checking them against the provider’s current support information.
| Provider | Verified balance route | What you should see | What to do if it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vodacom | Dial *135# from a Vodacom cellphone to access USSD self-service and view balances. Vodacom’s help page also lists *135# for contract and prepaid balance enquiry. (help.vodacom.co.za) | A USSD menu or balance response should appear on your handset. | Check that the request is sent from the Vodacom SIM. If USSD still fails, try My Vodacom or VodaPay. |
| MTN | Dial *136# to check your balance. MTN also lists *136*1# for detailed balance enquiries. (MTN) | You should see a balance response or detailed balance menu. | If only airtime shows, try the detailed balance route or use the MTN app or support options. |
| Telkom | Dial *188# from a Telkom SIM to check data and voice balances. Telkom also lists WhatsApp on 086 160 1700and the MyTelkom App as balance-checking options. (Telkom) | You should see or hear your balance, depending on the route used. | If *188# fails, try the MyTelkom App, Telkom WhatsApp, or call 188 where available. |
| Cell C | Dial *101# or dial *147# and choose the balance option. Cell C also lists app, IVR, SMS, website, and agent-assisted balance routes. (Cell C) | You should see a balance response or a menu with balance enquiry options. | If the basic balance does not show data, try the detailed balance option, the Cell C app, or Cell C support. |
If the provider menu opens but the data balance is not visible, look for “detailed balance”, “bundle balance”, “data balance”, “usage”, or “remaining bundles”. Do not buy another bundle until you have checked whether an existing bundle is active.
When to Use an App, Website, or Customer Care Instead
Use another channel when the USSD code keeps failing, when your balance looks wrong, or when money has already been deducted.
Step 1: Stop retrying repeatedly
Try once, wait, then try once more. If the same error appears again, stop. The issue may be with the USSD session, the network, the SIM, or the account. Repeating the same request many times usually does not fix the problem.
Step 2: Capture the problem
Before contacting support, write down:
- the exact code you dialled;
- the error message shown;
- the time and date;
- the mobile number affected;
- whether the SIM is prepaid, contract, top-up, router, or business;
- whether you recently recharged, bought data, did a SIM swap, or ported your number;
- whether airtime, data, or a bundle purchase was involved.
A screenshot can help if the error appears on screen.
Step 3: Check the provider app or website
If you have Wi-Fi or another internet connection, try your provider’s app or website. Apps often show more detail than a short USSD reply, including bundle type, expiry date, recurring bundles, night data, promotional data, and shared allocations.
Use the app or website especially when:
- the USSD menu opens but does not show data;
- the balance shown is different from what you expected;
- the bundle was recently bought;
- the SIM is used in a router or MiFi device;
- the data is part of a contract, promotion, or shared-data product.
Step 4: Contact customer care when account access or money is involved
Contact your provider if:
- your data bundle was paid for but does not show;
- airtime was deducted but no bundle appears;
- the USSD code says invalid on the correct network;
- your balance suddenly dropped;
- your SIM recently lost signal unexpectedly;
- the account was blocked, suspended, SIM-swapped, or ported;
- you suspect an unauthorised transaction, subscription, or SIM activity.
Do not share OTPs, banking PINs, app passwords, or full card details with anyone who contacts you first. Use the provider’s official app, website, store, or support channel.
Safe Retry Checklist
Before trying the data balance code again, confirm:
- The correct SIM is selected for calls.
- The SIM belongs to the provider whose code you are dialling.
- The phone has usable signal.
- Airplane mode is off.
- The USSD session is not already open in the background.
- You are not copying a code from an old screenshot or social post.
- You are checking the balance, not accidentally opening a purchase or transfer menu.
- You have waited briefly if the bundle was just bought.
- You have checked the provider app if USSD keeps failing.
- You have saved proof if money was deducted or a recharge did not reflect.

FAQs
Why is my data balance code not working?
Your data balance code may not be working because you are using the wrong network code, the USSD session timed out, the menu changed, the network is unavailable, the SIM is restricted, or the data bundle is shown under a detailed balance section. Check the correct SIM, signal, provider route, and account status before retrying.
Does this mean the code has changed?
Not always. A failed USSD request can happen even when the code is still correct. The menu may be temporarily unavailable, your session may have expired, or your phone may be sending the request from the wrong SIM. Verify the current route with your provider before assuming the code has changed.
Can I fix it without calling customer care?
Often, yes. Restart the phone, check the correct SIM, move to better signal, retry after a short wait, and try the provider app or website. Contact customer care if the bundle is missing, money was deducted, the code keeps failing, or the account may be restricted.
Should I use the app instead of USSD?
Use the app when USSD keeps timing out or when you need a detailed view of your data. Apps can often show expiry dates, promotional balances, shared data, night data, and recurring bundles more clearly than USSD. Use Wi-Fi if your mobile data is unavailable.
Does checking a data balance require airtime or mobile data?
USSD normally runs through the mobile network rather than through an internet connection, but availability can still depend on the provider, SIM type, account status, and network conditions. Do not assume that every balance code is free or available on every SIM unless the provider confirms it.
Why is my data balance not showing after I bought data?
The bundle may still be processing, may have loaded to a different number, may be under a detailed balance section, or may be a promotional, night-time, shared, or recurring bundle. If payment was taken and the bundle still does not show, keep the transaction reference and contact the provider.
Why does my airtime show but my data does not?
Some providers separate airtime, data, SMS, promotional, and detailed bundle balances. If the first screen only shows airtime, look for a detailed balance, bundle balance, data balance, or usage option.
What should I do before confirming a purchase or transfer?
Check the amount, bundle size, expiry date, receiving number, and whether the transaction is once-off or recurring. Stop if the wording is unclear, the session has timed out, or the menu shows a different product from the one you intended to buy.
Where can I find related airtime or data guides?
Use check data balance USSD code for balance routes, buy data USSD code for bundle purchases, and airtime not showing after recharge if a recharge or bundle has not reflected.
