USSD Session Timed Out

  • Primary code *135#
  • Also listed *136#
  • Also listed *188#
  • Also listed *101#

USSD session timed out message means the menu closed before your request was completed. There is no universal “USSD session timed out code” that fixes every network. The safest next step is to use the correct provider code for the action you were trying to complete, check whether anything already went through, and only retry once you know the transaction, recharge, bundle, or subscription was not processed.

USSD normally works without mobile data, but it still needs a working mobile network connection. GSMA notes that USSD can work without an internet connection or data, while ITU guidance explains that USSD is session-based and may fail when communication with the mobile network is weak or unstable. Airtime, Data, and Balance Codes

USSD session expired message during a balance check is usually lower risk than a timeout during a recharge, bundle purchase, or payment confirmation. If money, airtime, or a voucher PIN was involved, check your balance before repeating the action.

Check network/account status

Start with the balance route for your network:

ProviderBalance checkData or bundle routeRecharge route
Vodacom*135# or *136#*135#*136*01*Recharge PIN#
MTN*136#*136*2#Use MTN’s official recharge route or the instructions printed with the voucher
Telkom*188#*180#*188*voucher PIN#
Cell C*101# or *147#*147# or *109#*102*voucher PIN#

Vodacom’s self-service page says *135# can be used to view balances and buy bundles; Telkom’s customer-care page lists *188#*180#, and *188*voucher pin#; Cell C’s FAQ lists *101# / *147# for balance and *102*voucherpin# for recharge; MTN’s USSD and recharge pages list *136# and *136*2# routes. (Vodacom)

Retry safely

If the menu timed out before you confirmed anything, move to a stronger signal area and try the correct code again. If the timeout happened after you entered a voucher PIN, chose a paid bundle, accepted a subscription, or confirmed a transaction, check your balance, SMS messages, and app history first.

Do not keep submitting the same voucher PIN or paid bundle request repeatedly. If a recharge failed, use airtime voucher not working. If the recharge seemed successful but airtime did not appear, use airtime not showing after recharge.

Subscriptions, SIM, and PUK Codes

A timeout on a subscription, SIM, or PUK menu should be handled carefully because it may involve recurring billing or account security.

Customer Care and Support Codes

When reporting a timed-out USSD issue, keep the details simple: provider, phone number affected, code dialled, date and time, error message, voucher PIN or bundle amount if relevant, and any SMS confirmation received. Do not share OTPs, banking PINs, card PINs, passwords, or full card details with anyone claiming they can fix a USSD timeout.

FAQs

What is the code for USSD session timed out?

There is no single code for USSD session timed out. Use the correct provider code for the task you were trying to complete, such as balance, data, recharge, subscriptions, PUK, SIM help, or customer care.

Why is USSD session timed out happening?

Common causes include weak signal, a slow response to a menu prompt, a temporary network issue, a provider menu problem, the wrong SIM being selected on a dual-SIM phone, or a session that expired before confirmation. These are likely causes, not guaranteed fixes.

What should users try before contacting support?

Check signal, confirm the correct SIM is selected, close and reopen the dialler, dial the correct provider code again, and check your balance or SMS messages before repeating any paid action.

Can retrying the USSD request cause extra charges?

It depends on the action. Reopening a balance menu is different from repeating a bundle purchase, voucher recharge, banking transaction, or subscription confirmation. If you already entered a PIN, selected a bundle, or confirmed a paid action, check your balance and transaction history before retrying.

Does this USSD code need airtime or data?

USSD does not need mobile data in the same way an app or website does, but it still needs a working mobile network connection. Some USSD actions may also involve service charges, purchases, subscriptions, bank fees, or airtime deductions depending on the provider and task.

What should I do if the code does not work?

Use USSD code not working if the menu does not open. Use connection problem or invalid MMI code if your phone shows an MMI error. Use mobile network customer care numbers if the problem repeats or involves money, airtime, a SIM, PUK, or account security.

How should users report USSD session timed out safely?

Report it through the provider’s official customer care number, app, website, WhatsApp channel, or store. Include the code, time, phone number affected, error shown, and any recharge or bundle details. Never send OTPs, banking PINs, app passwords, or full card details to someone who contacts you first.
