A cash voucher expired message means the withdrawal code, voucher, PIN, or collection instruction may no longer be usable. The safest next step is not to guess another code. Check the voucher status through the sender’s bank, the official banking app, online banking, cellphone banking menu, or the bank’s support channel.
There is no single “cash voucher expired code” for every South African bank. Nedbank, Absa, FNB, Standard Bank, and Capitec each use different send-money systems, different expiry rules, and different recovery steps.
Quick Answer and Code/Menu Path
If a cash voucher expired, first identify which bank or wallet created it. Then check whether the voucher is expired, unredeemed, already withdrawn, blocked, cancelled, or linked to a wrong cellphone number.
| Provider | What to check | Official code or menu status |
|---|---|---|
| Nedbank Send money / cardless withdrawal | Voucher number, 4-digit PIN, expiry, resend, cancellation | Nedbank says recipients can retrieve lost voucher details by dialling *120*002#, selecting Help, then Get cash voucher. Nedbank says vouchers are valid for 30 days and the money is returned to the sender if the voucher expires. (Nedbank) |
| Absa CashSend | 10-digit reference, 6-digit access code, 30-day availability, unredeemed transaction | Absa CashSend via cellphone banking starts from *120*2272#. Absa says CashSend transactions are available for 30 days only and unredeemed CashSend transactions can be managed on Absa Online Banking. (Absa) |
| FNB eWallet | Temporary ATM PIN, eWallet PIN, withdrawal route, reversal route | FNB says a recipient can dial *120*277# and select Get Cash to receive a temporary ATM PIN. FNB’s product guideline says the temporary ATM PIN is valid for 30 minutes only and must be requested again if it expires. (FNB) |
| Standard Bank Instant Money | Voucher status, cash collection PIN, resend, reset PIN | Standard Bank says Instant Money Wallet users can dial *120*212# to resend vouchers, reset PIN codes, and view voucher statuses. (Standard Bank) |
| Capitec Send Cash | Reference number, 4-digit secret code, unredeemed voucher, secret-code update | Capitec says Send Cash can be sent using *120*3279#; the sender can view Send Cash history and update the secret code for unredeemed vouchers through Internet banking. (Capitec Bank) |
Use retrieve cash voucher USSD code if the voucher details were lost or deleted. Use cash voucher SMS not received if the SMS never arrived. Use send money USSD code South Africa if you still need to identify the right bank or wallet.
How to Send Money or Withdraw Cash
A cash voucher usually works in two parts. The sender creates the voucher using a banking app, online banking, cellphone banking, ATM, or retailer. The receiver then withdraws the cash using a voucher number, reference number, access code, secret code, or temporary PIN.
A voucher may stop working because:
- the voucher has expired;
- the temporary ATM PIN has expired;
- the recipient entered the wrong code;
- the sender cancelled the voucher;
- the money has already been withdrawn;
- the cellphone number was entered incorrectly;
- the SMS was delayed, deleted, or sent to the wrong number;
- the ATM, retailer, or cellphone banking session is unavailable.
For Nedbank, recipients receive a 10-digit voucher number and four-digit PIN and can withdraw at a Nedbank ATM or participating retail store. Nedbank also says Send money includes features such as cancelling a voucher, viewing recent payments, resending voucher SMSs, and sharing transaction details. (Nedbank)
For Absa CashSend, the sender enters a 6-digit access PIN or code that the beneficiary uses to get the funds from an Absa ATM. The sender must make sure the recipient receives the correct reference or withdrawal number and the correct access code. (Absa)
For FNB eWallet, the recipient can dial *120*277#, select Get Cash, receive a temporary ATM PIN by SMS, and use it at an FNB ATM. If the temporary ATM PIN expires, the recipient must request a new one through the cellphone menu.
For Capitec Send Cash, the recipient needs the reference number and 4-digit secret code. Capitec says the reference number can be shared by the sender, but the secret code should be sent separately. (Capitec Bank)
Check network and account status
Before assuming that a cash voucher expired, check whether the receiver’s phone has network signal, the SIM is active, the SMS inbox is not full, and the cellphone number is the same number used in the transaction. If the receiver recently lost signal unexpectedly, treat it seriously because SIM-swap fraud can interrupt banking messages and OTPs. SABRIC warns that loss of mobile connectivity can be a sign of a possible SIM swap. (sabric.co.za)
Retry safely
Retry only through the official banking app, online banking, cellphone banking code, ATM menu, retailer till process, or bank support route. Do not ask a stranger at an ATM to help with the voucher. Do not read out the voucher number, OTP, PIN, banking password, or card details to anyone who calls you.
If the code fails once, pause and confirm the details. If it fails repeatedly, stop trying and ask the sender to check the transaction status. Repeated wrong attempts can block a PIN, delay the withdrawal, or increase the risk of sharing details with the wrong person.
Escalation route
The sender should escalate first because the sender normally has access to the transaction history, cancellation option, reversal option, or resend option. Keep the date, amount, cellphone number, reference number, voucher status, ATM or store location, and exact error message.
For Nedbank, if a voucher has not been used and money was sent to the wrong cellphone number, Nedbank says clients can call for help cancelling the voucher and arranging a refund. Nedbank also says Money app users can cancel eligible Send money transactions from recent Send money payments. (Nedbank)
For Capitec, if a cash payout cannot be completed, Capitec says users should contact its Client Care Centre. Capitec also says unredeemed vouchers can have the secret code updated through Internet banking. (Capitec Bank)
Fees, Limits, Expiry, and Reversal Notes
Fees, limits, expiry times, and reversal rules must be checked with the relevant bank before publication or before authorising a transaction. They can differ by bank, account, channel, amount, and product version.
Nedbank states that its Send money voucher is valid for 30 days only, and the money will be returned to the sender if the voucher has expired. Nedbank also lists a default limit of R2,500 and says clients can send up to R5,000 a day, subject to the applicable profile and limits. (Nedbank)
Absa states that CashSend transactions are available for 30 days only. Absa also states that, for existing and once-off beneficiaries, CashSend limits are R5,000 per day and R25,000 per month. Always confirm the current limit on-screen before completing the transaction. (Absa)
FNB’s eWallet guidance separates the temporary ATM PIN from the eWallet PIN. The temporary ATM PIN is used to draw cash at an FNB ATM and is valid for 30 minutes only. The eWallet PIN protects funds in the eWallet and is not the same as the temporary ATM PIN.
Standard Bank says Instant Money Wallet users can store vouchers of up to R25,000 a month and send up to R10,000 a day from the wallet. It also says *120*212# can be used to resend vouchers, reset PIN codes, and view voucher statuses. (Standard Bank)
Capitec’s Send Cash page lists current Send Cash fees and limits by channel. It says USSD allows up to R1,000 per transaction and R1,000 daily, while app and Internet banking allow up to R3,000 per transaction and R5,000 daily. Capitec also states that fees are charged for sending, while collecting the cash is free at listed retailers and Capitec ATMs. (Capitec Bank)
Safety Checks Before You Confirm
Cash voucher problems are common, but they are also used in scams. Be especially careful if someone says your voucher has expired and then pressures you to send a new voucher, approve a banking prompt, transfer money to a “safe account”, or share a PIN.
Before you confirm any send-money action, check:
- the recipient cellphone number;
- the amount;
- the bank or wallet name;
- the voucher status;
- whether the voucher is already withdrawn;
- whether the code is a voucher code, ATM PIN, secret code, or banking PIN;
- whether the message came from an official banking channel.
Never share your banking PIN, OTP, online banking password, card CVV, full card number, or app approval with another person. SABRIC says banks will never ask customers to confirm confidential information over the phone and warns users not to provide an OTP telephonically to anybody. (sabric.co.za)
Capitec warns customers never to act on instructions to perform a Send Cash transaction, transfer money to a “safe account”, or approve a transaction to stop fraud or reverse unauthorised debit orders. Capitec also says customers should not share confidential banking information such as banking PINs. (Capitec Bank)
Official support route
Use the support route inside the official app, the number printed on your bank card, the bank’s own website, or the contact option shown inside online banking. Do not trust a phone number sent in a suspicious SMS, WhatsApp message, social media inbox, or pop-up advert.
If you suspect fraud, stop the transaction, block access if needed, and contact the bank directly through an official channel. If your phone loses signal unexpectedly or you stop receiving banking messages, contact your mobile network and bank immediately because SIM-swap fraud may be involved. (sabric.co.za)

Sometimes, but only if the bank allows it and the money has not been withdrawn. It depends on the bank. Nedbank says expired vouchers are returned to the sender after 30 days. Absa says CashSend is available for 30 days only. FNB says a temporary eWallet ATM PIN is valid for 30 minutes and must be requested again if it expires. (Nedbank)
Are there fees or limits for cash voucher expired?
Yes, fees and limits can apply, but they differ by bank and channel. Nedbank, Absa, Standard Bank, FNB, and Capitec each publish their own limits, fees, and conditions. Always check the current fee and limit on-screen before confirming a transaction.
What should users do if cash voucher expired is not working?
Stop, check the voucher status, and ask the sender to confirm the transaction in their banking app or official menu. Confirm that the code is not already used, cancelled, blocked, or sent to the wrong number. If the SMS never arrived, use cash voucher SMS not received.
