Quick Code/Menu Answer

The emergency airtime USSD code depends on your mobile network. There is no single code that works for every South African SIM. Use the option for your own provider, then read the amount, service fee, repayment message, and eligibility result before you confirm.

Emergency airtime is not the same as buying normal airtime. It is an advance that is usually repaid from your next recharge. Before accepting, check whether the amount offered is enough for your call, SMS, bundle purchase, or urgent data need. For normal top-ups, use the buy airtime USSD code guide. For the broader directory, start with airtime and data USSD codes South Africa.

Provider-by-Provider Options

Vodacom Airtime Advance

Vodacom’s emergency airtime option is called Airtime Advance. If you qualify, dial *135*082# and select Airtime, or dial *135# and choose Airtime & Transfers. Vodacom says the menu can also be used for Data Advance and Voice Advance where available, so choose the airtime option if you specifically need airtime. (Vodacom)

Vodacom’s current Airtime Advance terms show that an access fee is added to the amount advanced. For example, Vodacom explains that a R10 Airtime Advance plus a R1.20 access fee would result in R11.20 being deducted on recharge. (Vodacom)

Use Vodacom Airtime Advance when you are on a Vodacom SIM, cannot recharge immediately, and the menu says you qualify. For more Vodacom self-service menus, see Vodacom USSD codes.

MTN Airtime Advance Code

MTN’s airtime advance service is called XtraTime. MTN says users can dial *136*2# or *151#, select XtraTime, and follow the prompts. MTN’s USSD code page also lists *151*2# for applying for an airtime advance. (MTN)

MTN describes XtraTime as a service that lets customers get airtime, voice, or data bundles in advance and repay later. MTN’s current XtraTime information states that customers repay the advanced amount plus a service fee of R1.10 per R10 advanced, or part thereof. (MTN)

Use the MTN airtime advance code only from an MTN SIM. If the menu offers data or voice bundles instead of airtime, choose carefully so you do not accept the wrong product. For more MTN menus, see MTN USSD codes.

Cell C Emergency Airtime Code

The Cell C emergency airtime code starts from *147#. Cell C says customers can dial *147# and select Emergency Recharge to access Emergency Airtime. (Cell C)

Cell C says Emergency Airtime is available to Prepaid and TopUp customers who have been on the Cell C network for at least 30 days and have recharged with at least R10 every 30 days. Cell C also states that Emergency Airtime can be used for calls, SMS, internet access, or buying bundles, but not for premium-rated content or services. (Cell C)

Cell C states that a flat access fee of R1.10 is charged per Emergency Airtime transaction, and that the outstanding Emergency Airtime plus access fee is deducted when the customer recharges. (Cell C)

Use the Cell C emergency airtime code when you need a temporary airtime advance and your Cell C menu confirms that you qualify. For more Cell C menus, see Cell C USSD codes.

Telkom Emergency Top Up

Telkom’s emergency airtime option is called Emergency Top Up. Telkom says users can dial *180#, select Emergency Top Up, and opt in to see what they qualify for. (Telkom)

Telkom’s Emergency Top Up terms say the service lets qualifying customers request airtime or data in advance when they are low or out of airtime or data, then pay it back on their next recharge. (group.telkom.co.za)

Telkom’s terms say the service is for Telkom Pre-paid or Top-Up customers who have been active on the Telkom network for 30 consecutive days or more, have recharged in the last 30 days, and have completed RICA. Telkom also lists USSD access through *180# or *123# by selecting the Emergency Top Up option. (group.telkom.co.za)

Telkom currently states that a R1.10 service fee is charged per Emergency Top Up transaction, and the borrowed amount plus fee is deducted on recharge. (group.telkom.co.za)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Confirm your network first

Emergency airtime USSD codes are network-specific. A Vodacom airtime advance code will not work on MTN, Cell C, or Telkom. Check the SIM in your phone before dialling, especially if you use dual SIM.

2. Dial the matching emergency airtime code

Use the code for your provider:

Your SIMDial this
Vodacom*135*082# or *135#
MTN*136*2#*151#, or *151*2#
Cell C*147#
Telkom*180#

3. Choose the emergency airtime menu

Look for wording such as Airtime Advance, XtraTime, Emergency Airtime, Emergency Recharge, or Emergency Top Up. If the menu shows both airtime and data, choose the product you actually need.

4. Check the offer before confirming

Before you accept the advance, check:

Check thisWhy it matters
Advance amountYou may only qualify for selected amounts.
Service feeThe amount deducted later can be higher than the airtime you receive.
Repayment amountYour next recharge may be reduced automatically.
Product typeAirtime, data, and voice advances are not always the same thing.
Usage rulesSome products may not work for premium services, transfers, or certain bundle purchases.
Eligibility messageIf you do not qualify, forcing retries will not usually solve the issue.

5. Confirm only if the details are clear

Do not confirm if the screen does not show the cost, the product type, or the repayment condition clearly. Exit the session and use the provider’s official app, website, or support route if the menu looks wrong.

6. Wait for confirmation

After confirming, wait for the SMS or on-screen confirmation. Do not repeat the same request several times in a row. A delayed USSD session can still process after the screen times out.

7. Check your balance

After the transaction, check your airtime balance before trying again. For help with balance checks, use check airtime balance USSD code.

8. Remember the repayment

Emergency airtime is normally recovered from future recharges. If you recharge and your airtime looks lower than expected, check whether an old emergency airtime amount and service fee were deducted first.

Common Problems and Fixes

The emergency airtime code says “invalid”

This can happen when you dial the wrong network code, use an old menu path, or enter the code from the wrong SIM on a dual-SIM phone.

Try this:

  1. Check which SIM is active for calls.
  2. Dial the provider’s main self-service menu instead.
  3. Choose the airtime, recharge, or emergency top-up option from the live menu.
  4. Use the provider’s official app or help page if the code has changed.

The menu says you do not qualify

You may not qualify because of your account type, recharge history, SIM age, RICA status, unpaid advance balance, or network risk profile. Cell C and Telkom both publish qualification rules that include network activity and recharge history, while Vodacom and MTN also use eligibility-based menus. (Cell C)

A safe next step is to recharge normally, wait for the account to update, and then check the emergency airtime menu again later.

The airtime did not reflect

If the menu confirmed the advance but the airtime did not show immediately:

  1. Wait a few minutes for the SMS.
  2. Check your airtime balance.
  3. Restart your phone or switch flight mode on and off.
  4. Do not take another advance until you confirm whether the first one succeeded.
  5. Contact your provider if the SMS confirms success but the balance does not update.

My recharge disappeared after using emergency airtime

This often happens when the network deducts a previous emergency airtime balance and service fee from your recharge. Cell C says Emergency Airtime and the access fee are deducted when you recharge, and Telkom says the advanced amount plus service fee is deducted on the next recharge. (Cell C)

Check your transaction SMSs before assuming airtime was lost.

The USSD session keeps timing out

USSD sessions can fail because of weak signal, temporary network problems, roaming, a blocked SIM, or menu downtime.

Try this safe retry route:

  1. Move to stronger signal.
  2. Turn flight mode on and off.
  3. Dial the code once more.
  4. Wait before retrying.
  5. Use the official app or support route if USSD still fails.

The menu offers data instead of airtime

Some networks group airtime, data, and voice advances under the same emergency or advance menu. Do not accept data if you need airtime for calls or SMS. If you specifically need data, use the emergency data USSD code guide.

The code asks for personal or banking details

Be careful. A normal emergency airtime USSD menu should not ask for unrelated banking passwords, card PINs, or OTPs. If a code was shared by an unknown social media account, do not use it. Exit the session and use the provider’s official menu or app instead.

FAQs

What is the code for emergency airtime USSD code?

The code depends on your network. Vodacom users can dial *135*082# or use *135#. MTN users can dial *136*2#*151#, or *151*2# where available. Cell C users can dial *147# and select Emergency Recharge. Telkom users can dial *180# and select Emergency Top Up. (Vodacom)

Does emergency airtime USSD code need airtime or data?

Emergency airtime menus are designed for users who are low on airtime or out of airtime, and USSD does not require a mobile data app session. However, the airtime advance itself usually has a service fee and is recovered from a future recharge, so always check the confirmation screen before accepting.

Who qualifies for emergency airtime?

Qualification depends on your provider. Networks can look at account type, recharge history, time active on the network, RICA status, outstanding advances, and usage behaviour. Cell C says its Emergency Airtime is for Prepaid and TopUp customers who have been on the network for at least 30 days and have recharged with at least R10 every 30 days. Telkom says Emergency Top Up requires a qualifying Pre-paid or Top-Up account, at least 30 consecutive days active on the network, a recharge in the last 30 days, and completed RICA. (Cell C)

Why might emergency airtime USSD code fail?

It may fail because you used the wrong network code, the menu changed, the USSD session timed out, your SIM does not qualify, your account type is not supported, your signal is poor, or you already have an unpaid advance. Try the provider’s main self-service menu and follow the live prompts.

What should I do before confirming emergency airtime?

Check the amount advanced, the service fee, the total repayment amount, the product type, and the usage rules. Do not confirm if you wanted airtime but the menu selected data, or if the repayment message is unclear.

Can I borrow airtime more than once?

Sometimes, but only if your provider’s menu says you qualify. Cell C says customers may make multiple Emergency Airtime transactions up to the maximum amount they are authorised for, and Telkom says qualifying customers can borrow multiple advances up to the maximum of their qualified amount. (Cell C)

Why did my new recharge not give me full airtime?

Your provider may have deducted your outstanding emergency airtime balance and service fee first. This is normal for airtime advance products, but you should check your SMS confirmation and balance history if the deduction looks wrong.
