Quick Code/Menu Answer

The emergency data USSD code depends on your mobile network. There is no one code that works for every South African SIM, so start with the correct provider menu and check the offer on screen before you confirm.

TelkomDial *180#, then select Emergency Top UpTelkom says Emergency Top Up gives qualifying prepaid and Top-Up customers airtime or data on credit through *180#. (Telkom)

Use this page when you need to borrow data quickly, but do not treat emergency data as free data. Emergency data is normally repaid from your next recharge, and most providers charge a service or access fee. For normal bundle purchases instead of borrowing, use buy data USSD code. For the broader directory, start with airtime and data USSD codes South Africa.

Provider-by-Provider Options

Vodacom emergency data

Vodacom calls its emergency data option Data Advance. Start by dialling *135*082# or *135#, then follow the menu for Airtime, Data or Voice Advance. Vodacom says you can check whether you qualify through these menus, and it lists Data Advance amounts such as 20MB, 35MB, 75MB, 120MB and 300MB, depending on what your profile qualifies for. (Vodacom)

Vodacom states that an access fee of R1.20, VAT included, applies for every R10 or part of R10 advanced, and that repayment is deducted when you recharge or purchase a direct bundle. (Vodacom)

Use Vodacom Data Advance when you are on Vodacom, have no usable data left, and the menu shows a data advance you are happy to repay. Do not confirm if the screen only shows airtime advance and you need actual mobile data.

MTN emergency data

MTN’s emergency data route is usually through XtraTime. Dial *136*2# or *151#, then select XtraTime and follow the prompts. MTN says XtraTime can be used for Airtime, Voice, Data and Social bundles. (MTN)

MTN also lists XtraTime as a pay-later option for customers who need airtime, voice or data bundles in advance, with repayment on the next airtime recharge or direct data bundle purchase. MTN states that the XtraTime service fee is R1.10 per R10 advanced, or part of R10 advanced. (MTN)

If MTN does not show a data option, check whether your SIM qualifies for XtraTime data specifically. Some customers may see airtime or social bundles but not the exact data bundle they wanted.

Cell C emergency data

The Cell C emergency data code starts with *147#. Cell C says customers can dial *147# and select Emergency Data, then choose the Emergency Data or WhatsApp bundle option shown in the menu. (Cell C)

Cell C says Emergency Data is available to prepaid and TopUp customers who have been on the Cell C network for at least 30 days and have recharged with at least R10 every 30 days. The provider also says customers can check whether they qualify by dialling *147# and selecting Emergency Recharge. (Cell C)

Cell C charges a flat access fee of R1.10 per Emergency Data transaction, and the emergency data amount plus the access fee is deducted when you recharge with airtime. (Cell C)

Telkom emergency data

Telkom’s emergency data service is called Emergency Top Up. Dial *180#, select Emergency Top Up, and opt in if your SIM qualifies. Telkom describes Emergency Top Up as airtime or data on credit for qualifying prepaid and Top-Up customers. (Telkom)

Telkom’s FAQ says the service is available to prepaid and Top-Up customers, not post-paid customers. To qualify, Telkom says the customer must be active on the Telkom network for 30 consecutive days or more, must have recharged in the last 30 days, and must have completed RICA.

Telkom lists a R1.10 VAT-inclusive service fee per emergency transaction, deducted with the outstanding emergency amount when the customer recharges.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Confirm the SIM and network

Use the SIM card that needs data. A borrow data USSD code is network-specific, so a Vodacom code will not work on Cell C, and a Cell C emergency data code will not work on MTN.

2. Dial the correct provider menu

Open your phone dialler and enter the relevant code:

NetworkStart here
Vodacom*135*082# or *135#
MTN*136*2# or *151#
Cell C*147#
Telkom*180#

USSD menus are dialled from the phone app rather than opened through a browser. USSD does not rely on an internet connection in the same way that an app or website does, but the emergency data transaction itself can still carry a provider fee. (Pelion)

3. Choose the emergency data option

Look for wording such as:

Do not choose a normal data bundle if your goal is to borrow data and repay later. Normal data purchases belong under buy data USSD code.

4. Read the confirmation screen

Before you confirm, check:

This is the most important step. If the screen does not clearly show the cost and bundle type, cancel and use the provider app, self-service site, or support route.

5. Confirm only once

Confirm only if the data amount, fee and repayment are clear. If the USSD session times out, do not keep confirming repeatedly. Wait for the SMS response, then check your data balance.

6. Check whether the data reflects

After confirmation, wait a few minutes and check your data balance. If the bundle has not reflected, use check data balance USSD code before trying again. Repeating the request too quickly can make it harder to tell whether you were charged, declined, or still waiting for allocation.

Common Problems and Fixes

The code does not work

The most common reason is that the wrong network code was used. Check the SIM in the phone, confirm the network name, then dial the provider’s main USSD menu again.

If the direct shortcut fails, try the main self-service code instead:

NetworkTry this
Vodacom*135#
MTN*136*2#
Cell C*147#
Telkom*180#

The menu says you do not qualify

You may not qualify because your SIM is too new, your recharge history is too low, your RICA or account status is incomplete, your account type is not eligible, or you already owe an emergency advance. Cell C and Telkom publish specific 30-day activity and recharge rules, while Vodacom and MTN use qualification checks based on customer profile and network activity. (Cell C)

The safest fix is to recharge normally, repay any outstanding emergency amount, and try again later.

The menu shows airtime but not data

Some emergency services include both airtime and data, but that does not mean every customer will see every option. Your offers may depend on your profile, recharge history, product type, and current outstanding amount.

If you need data and the menu only offers airtime, cancel and use a normal data purchase route instead. Start with buy data USSD code.

The data expires too quickly

Emergency data can have shorter validity than normal monthly data. Telkom’s FAQ, for example, lists different Emergency Top Up Data categories such as hourly, daily, weekly, weekend and social bundles.

Always check the validity before confirming. Do not choose an hourly or daily bundle if you need data for the whole week.

Airtime disappeared after recharging

Emergency data is repaid from a later recharge. Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom all describe repayment of the advanced amount plus an access or service fee. (Vodacom)

If your recharge balance looks lower than expected, check whether an earlier emergency data or airtime advance was recovered.

The data does not work after confirmation

Check whether the bundle is normal data or a restricted bundle. Some offers may be social, WhatsApp, Telkom-only, or otherwise limited. Telkom warns that Telkom-only data is only available on the Telkom Mobile network and does not roam on roaming partners’ networks. (Telkom)

Turn mobile data off and on, check your balance, confirm the bundle type, and only then contact the provider if the problem remains.

The USSD session times out

USSD sessions can time out if you take too long, if the signal drops, or if the provider menu is busy. Start again from the beginning and move through the menu carefully. Do not press confirm multiple times unless the screen clearly asks you to do so.

Retry Safely

Use this safe retry order:

  1. Check that the SIM is on the correct network.
  2. Move to a stronger signal area.
  3. Dial the main provider menu, not only a saved shortcut.
  4. Check your data balance.
  5. Check whether you already owe an advance.
  6. Try once more after a few minutes.
  7. Use the provider app, portal, or official support channel if airtime or data is missing.

Avoid emergency data codes shared in random WhatsApp messages, social posts, or comment sections. A real emergency data menu should not ask for your banking PIN, card PIN, app password, or one-time password.

Official Support Route

If the emergency data USSD code still fails, use your provider’s official app, website, portal, store, or help channel. Vodacom lists VodaPay and its self-service menu as ways to check qualifying advance amounts, MTN lists the MTN App as an XtraTime access route, Cell C lists the Cell C App and Self Service as Emergency Data access options, and Telkom lists the Telkom App and Telkom Portal for Emergency Top Up. FAQ

What is the code for emergency data USSD code?

The code depends on your network. Vodacom users can start with *135*082# or *135#, MTN users can start with *136*2# or *151#, Cell C users can start with *147#, and Telkom users can start with *180#. Check the offer on screen before confirming because fees, qualification and bundle types differ by provider. (Vodacom)

What is the safest way to use emergency data USSD code?

Use only your provider’s official USSD menu, confirm that the SIM is on the correct network, and read the full confirmation screen before accepting. Check the data amount, validity, fee and repayment amount. Cancel if the menu asks for banking details, OTPs or unrelated personal information.

Does emergency data USSD code require airtime or mobile data?

USSD is dialled from the phone app and does not rely on an internet connection like a website or app does. However, emergency data is usually not free. Providers may recover the data amount and a service or access fee from your next recharge. (Pelion)

Who qualifies for emergency data?

Qualification depends on the provider. Cell C says prepaid and TopUp customers must have been on the network for at least 30 days and recharged with at least R10 every 30 days. Telkom says prepaid and Top-Up customers must be active for 30 consecutive days or more, have recharged in the last 30 days, and have completed RICA. Vodacom and MTN use profile and recharge-history checks to decide what each customer can advance. (Cell C)

Why might emergency data USSD code fail or show the wrong balance?

It may fail because you used the wrong provider code, the USSD session timed out, the SIM does not qualify, the network menu has changed, your signal is weak, your account is restricted, or an earlier emergency advance is still unpaid. Check your balance, wait for the confirmation SMS, and use official support if the deduction or data allocation still looks wrong.

What should users do before confirming a purchase or transfer?

Check the network, bundle type, data amount, expiry time, access fee, repayment amount and whether the bundle is restricted to a specific app or network. If anything is unclear, cancel and use the provider app or official self-service route.

Where can users find related airtime or data guides?

Start with airtime and data USSD codes South Africa. For normal data purchases, use buy data USSD code. For balances, use check data balance USSD code. For airtime advances, use emergency airtime USSD code.
